No Promise of Tomorrow

by R.B.Lowery

The sound of footsteps behind them startled Kenya as a figure
came, seemingly from out of nowhere. From the corner of her eyes she
saw Brett following them.
"What does he want?" Kenya whispered to herself softly.
Trying her best to ignore him, she and Geoffrey kept walking,
concentrating only on the sound of the rustling leaves beneath their
feet.
	 "Kenya!" he called out sharply.
Startled at the commanding sound of his voice, she shivered.
Instinctively she grabbed Geoffrey's arm. Turning slightly, Geoffrey
whispered to her. "Who is he and what does he want with you? Why is
he following us? You know, he's really starting to piss me off...."
She looked up into his handsome face. "That's Brett, baby", she
whispered. "Don't you remember my telling you about him? We dated
for months and then suddenly it was over. He just stopped calling me
and whenever explained why. I don't
understand why he would follow me now, when just a short time ago,
he couldn't wait to get away from me."
	"Kenya Thompson!"
	They stopped walking.
"What do you want?" Kenya yelled sternly as she slowly turned
around to face him She began walking toward him, stopping mid-way
when she saw the strange look on his face. Brett stood there, staring
first at Kenya and then past her at Geoffrey.
Recalling their brief, problem-plagued relationship, she
frowned. She was often afraid of him, remembering the verbal and
physical abuse. And the way he ended the relationship left her
saddened, confused but yet relieved. Now, her anger at being stalked
made her briefly forget her fear. As she neared him, she felt the
coldness emanating from his body.
	"Brett!" she started.
	"Shut UP", he interrupted Kenya!
"You can't talk to her that way!" Geoffrey's voice interrupted as
she faced Brett. "She no longer belongs with you. If you wanted her,
you should have treated her right when you had her!"
Brett was already angry and Geoffrey's comments only made
things worse. Kenya, who was very familiar with his temper, turned
slightly to silence Geoffrey, annoyance visible on her face. She wanted
to try and patch the rift between them. For
the first time since she met him, she sensed Brett could also be
dangerous!

Neither one of them saw the gun as Brett pulled it from his
pocket. "I've got to do this .. I've got to do this!" At the sound of his
voice, Kenya turned around. Noticing the gun in his hand, she tried to
hide the fear in her eyes.
"Brett? Why are you doing this? Please put the gun away. Is it
because of Geoffrey? Is it? Don't worry .. We're just friends," she
pleaded.
"I said shut up! You could never do what you were told! Now
you got me confused..."
"Leave her alone, Brett .. Go away and act like a real man. '
Geoffrey yelled out.
Kenya knew he hadn't seen the gun in Brett's hand "Shut up!"
she screamed at Geoffrey.
Suddenly she heard a pop as the gun went off. She stood staring
as Geoffrey fell to the ground The tips of her fingers were icy and
hysteria rose in her throat.
"Oh no! You shot him, Brett. My God, you shot him!" Brett
stared blankly at Kenya. Her heart pounded fiercely as she sensed the
danger she was in. "Brett, please. I know things were bad between us
but we could make them good again. Remember how much we loved
each other .. We can have that Brett," she pleaded "Just the two of us.
We won't let anyone come between us.

Tears rolled down his cheeks as he lowered his hands. Brett
looked past Kenya to the place where Geoffrey had fallen. She
followed the direction of his glance. She knew from the silence that
Geoffrey was already dead. Now, she had to do or
say whatever she could to save her life. She didn't want to die!
"Brett, "she began. He walked up to her and kissed her softly on the
lips to silence her. "I'm sorry Kenya. I'm so sorry baby... " Kenya heard
the gun go off again and felt a
hot, searing pain in her stomach. Grabbing her stomach as the nausea
rose in her throat, Kenya fell to her knees. She struggled against the
darkness that threatened her. His mission over, Brett walked away.
"Don't leave me here, Brett. Please don't leave me here to die."
She looked up at the back of his head and watched his familiar stride as
he hastily walked away. "Why Brett? Why did you have to do this... ?"
Kenya called out to him softly as she laid her head gently on the
ground, waiting for her turn to die!
Kenya sat up quickly in bed, beads of perspiration drenching her
nightgown. "Oh my God. Why am I having those terrible dreams?"
Night after night she awakened during from the same
nightmare. "What does it mean?" Trembling, she got out of bed, stood
in the middle of the floor and pulled off her perspiration soaked
nightgown. She examined her stomach ... no gunshot wounds.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Kenya walked slowly over to the window in
the dark. She sat down nude on the window seat and pressed her face
against the cool pane. The rain was coming down in sheets. She opened
the window slightly to enjoy the sound of the rain. Reliving the dream
she began to cry softly. She had never felt so alone in her life.
"Daddy, daddy," she wept over and over. Kenya had no idea
how long she sat there crying until she shivered from the cold. She got
up, walked over to her bed, grabbed her bathrobe and wrapped it
around her. Suddenly exhausted she laid down on her bed. "Why am I
having those horrible dreams? Who are Brett and Geoffrey? I'm so
tired. I need sleep but I'm so afraid! What if I don't wake up? I don't
really want to die! I don't want to die! ' The rain beat furiously against
her window and the wind blew the curtains back. Heart pounding, she
prayed over and over until she felt herself drifting off to sleep. An eerie
feeling enveloped her as she sensed a presence walk into her bedroom
and sit down on her bed......
